Weather shock Germany: November starts with storm, snow – then sudden warmth

Weather turnaround in Germany brings sunshine after storms

The start of November in Germany will be anything but dull. After days of stormy winds, heavy rain and early snow, forecasters say a major weather turnaround is on the way — bringing temperatures more typical of late spring than autumn.

Storms and snow kick off the month

A powerful Atlantic low-pressure system continues to dominate Germany’s weather this weekend.

Strong gusts are battering the North Sea and Baltic coasts, while scattered showers sweep across the country. In southern regions, the snow line is dropping below 1,000 metres, with fresh snow already reported in the Alps and upland areas.

Meteorologists expect the unsettled pattern to persist until Monday, as northwesterly winds carry cool and moist air into central Europe. By then, the snow line could briefly sink as low as 500 to 700 metres in parts of the Eifel, Harz and southern uplands.

Near the Alps, local downpours may even reach severe-weather levels, with short-lived heavy rainfall and storm gusts.

High pressure brings calm — and warmth

But the turbulent phase won’t last long. Starting Tuesday, the storm system will gradually move northeast, allowing a ridge of high pressure to build over central Europe.

As the winds shift to southerly directions, the air will turn much milder. By Thursday, daytime highs between 14 and 18°C are expected across most regions, with plenty of sunshine returning to the south.

Rainfall will also ease significantly, and the sky will alternate between sunshine and light clouds. The weather will take on a much friendlier and calmer character, marking the first stable spell in weeks.

Possible 20 degrees by the end of the month

Meteorologists are tracking a more persistent warm phase toward the end of October and the start of November.

Cold polar air from between Greenland and Iceland is pushing southward, fuelling deep Atlantic lows. In response, a high-pressure ridge is forming over central Europe, blocking those lows and steering warm air from North Africa northward into Germany.

This shift will likely lead to unusually mild conditions between 31 October and 3 November. Under ideal sunshine, local highs near 20°C are possible — a remarkable reading for early November.

12-degree temperature anomaly predicted

According to meteorologists from wetter.net, the approaching air mass will be around 12°C warmer than average for this time of year.

The European weather model (ECMWF) forecasts nationwide temperatures above 15°C on Saturday, while Germany’s ICON model goes even further, suggesting peaks of up to 20°C.

Experts link this development to a weakened polar vortex, which allows unstable air masses to drift across the continent. Despite the high-pressure dominance, short-lived cloudy or showery periods remain possible — yet overall, mild and pleasant autumn weather is expected to prevail.
