Ski lovers know the dilemma all too well: the excitement of the first descent on fresh snow is often overshadowed by the journey to get there. Hours of driving, traffic jams on icy roads or multiple train changes can quickly drain the holiday mood before it even begins. This winter, a new travel option promises to change that experience entirely.
A series of overnight ski trains — known as the “Urlaubs-Express” (UEX) — now offer direct travel from major cities in Germany and the Netherlands to some of the most popular ski resorts in Austria. Travellers step on board in the evening and wake up the next morning at the foot of the mountains, rested and ready to hit the slopes.
Direct routes to top Alpine destinations
Operated by a Cologne-based provider specialising in overnight and car-carrying trains, the UEX service significantly expands its winter programme. For the first time, direct trains will travel from cities such as Hamburg and Berlin, as well as from several Dutch departure points, to well-known ski locations. Among the destinations are Schladming, Kitzbühel, Zell am See and St. Johann im Pongau — all renowned winter hotspots in the Austrian Alps.
The highlight for travellers from Berlin is a special seasonal service launched for the winter school holidays. This night train links the German capital with Munich, Innsbruck, Ötztal and St. Anton, allowing passengers to spend the evening at home and arrive in the Alps the next morning.
New cross-border connections from the Netherlands
The offer is not limited to Germany. For the first time, UEX trains will also run from Amsterdam towards Austria, passing through Utrecht, Venlo, Mönchengladbach, Cologne and Siegburg. These routes connect Dutch winter holidaymakers directly with ski regions such as the Tyrolean Alps and the Salzburger Land — without the hassle of switching trains along the way.
The winter season for this overnight service begins on 26 December 2025 and continues through March, covering the peak months for winter sports. In addition, a car-carrying train will run between Hamburg and Munich/Innsbruck, making it possible to transport your own vehicle without driving long distances.
A more relaxed and eco-friendly journey
The concept offers a sustainable alternative to long car trips. With overnight seating and sleeping options, passengers save time, avoid traffic and reduce emissions. The service aims to offer a comfortable, nearly traffic-free start to a ski holiday — a welcome change for families and groups who want to maximise their time on the slopes rather than on the motorway.
Comfort on board: sleep, dine and bring your gear
Travellers can choose between reclining couchettes and fully equipped sleeper cabins, depending on comfort preference and budget. On-board catering is also available, allowing guests to enjoy snacks and drinks during their journey. Ski and snowboard equipment can be transported at no additional charge, making the service particularly attractive for winter sports travellers.
Even those who simply want to enjoy a winter escape without skiing can benefit. Alpine destinations such as Kitzbühel offer snow hiking tours, spa facilities, charming winter landscapes and lively après-ski experiences — making the overnight train a great option for a short winter break.
