Munich Police expand video surveillance at main station

The city’s police department has expanded its video surveillance network in the southern area of the main station district. Two mobile video towers have been installed at the intersections of Schillerstraße/Adolf-Kolping-Straße and Adolf-Kolping-Straße/Zweigstraße, adding to existing systems at Stachus and the Old Botanical Garden.

According to Police President Thomas Hampel, the area is currently considered a crime hotspot, particularly for assaults and drug-related offenses. “Beyond objective safety, the subjective sense of security among citizens also suffers,” Hampel said. The new towers are designed to help investigators detect and solve crimes faster.

Local officials back expanded surveillance

City economic affairs director and mayoral candidate Clemens Baumgärtner (CSU) welcomed the initiative, stating:

  • “I’m convinced this measure will help make the Schillerstraße area a place where people once again feel comfortable spending time. Both security and the sense of safety will improve.”
  • Baumgärtner had already called for increased video surveillance in the area earlier this year, emphasizing that residents and businesses had long demanded stronger safety measures.

Cutting-edge technology for better safety

Each of the mobile towers is equipped with remote-controlled cameras capable of panning, tilting, and zooming, alongside a 360-degree panoramic view. The footage is encrypted and transmitted directly to the police command center.
Since the systems are mobile, they can be relocated and redeployed wherever needed — for example, during large-scale events or emerging security concerns.

Part of a wider safety plan

The Munich Police stressed that surveillance is just one component of a larger safety concept. Other elements include increased patrols, improved lighting and cleanliness, and closer cooperation with local businesses and property owners.

These actions are coordinated under the “Taskforce Bahnhofsviertel”, a joint initiative between the police, the city’s administrative offices, and other municipal departments. The goal is to improve the situation in the district long term and strengthen residents’ overall sense of security.

A long-term effort to reclaim the station area

While the new technology provides police with better tools, officials acknowledge that video surveillance alone won’t solve deeper social problems in the area. Nevertheless, authorities believe the initiative represents a strong step toward restoring confidence in one of Munich’s busiest and most visible neighborhoods.
