A tragic accident occurred on a wet country road in Lower Saxony late Sunday, leaving two men dead after their car veered off the road and hit several trees in quick succession.
According to police, the victims were travelling between Echem and Scharnebeck in the Lüneburg district when their Audi attempted to overtake another vehicle at high speed.
Car collides with four trees
Initial investigations suggest that the driver lost control in a bend, skidding off the road and crashing into four roadside trees one after another.
The impact was so severe that the car was completely destroyed.
Emergency services, including a rescue helicopter, were immediately dispatched to the scene — but rescuers could do nothing to save the occupants.
Both victims died at the scene
The two men, aged 41 and 42, died at the crash site, police confirmed.
Authorities have launched a full investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident and whether speed and road conditions played a decisive role.
Local police also reminded drivers of the heightened danger of overtaking on wet rural roads, especially during autumn weather with fallen leaves and slippery surfaces.
