Rescue mission in the Ortler Alps

A tragic accident occurred in the Ortler mountain range in northern Italy on Saturday afternoon, claiming the lives of several German mountaineers. According to emergency services in South Tyrol, a group of high-altitude climbers was struck by a sudden slide of snow while ascending at around 3,200 metres.

The avalanche detached below the Vertainspitze peak, an area known for challenging alpine routes and unpredictable conditions. Despite the rapid deployment of mountain rescue teams, three climbers were found lifeless shortly after the incident.

Authorities say that two additional climbers from a separate German rope team remain missing and are feared to have also lost their lives. Two survivors were airlifted to a hospital — their injuries are still being assessed.

Search paused due to nightfall

As daylight faded, search teams were forced to halt operations late on Saturday. Harsh terrain, unstable snow layers and dropping temperatures presented significant risks to rescuers. The mission resumed on Sunday with helicopters, drones and thermal imaging equipment to locate the missing climbers.

Specialised mountain rescue teams worked alongside units of the Italian fire service and Guardia di Finanza, underscoring the scale of the ongoing effort.

A popular region under shock

South Tyrol, a beloved destination for hikers and skiers from Germany, is accustomed to heavy tourism throughout the year. The Ortler, rising to 3,905 metres, dominates the region and attracts many experienced mountaineers.

Incidents like this serve as a stark reminder of the dangers present even for skilled climbers — especially during seasonal transitions when snow conditions can change abruptly.

Investigation into snow conditions

Authorities will analyse the slope and recent weather data to determine what triggered the avalanche. In the high Alps, early winter conditions can create unstable snowpacks, particularly when fresh layers sit on top of hardened ice.

Local officials have expressed condolences to the victims’ families and called for heightened caution as winter approaches.
