A dramatic and unsettling scene unfolded in northern Munich early Wednesday. At around 4:40 a.m., firefighters were alerted to a blaze in a residential building on Lerchenauer Straße. Shortly afterward, reports came in of explosions and gunfire. Authorities temporarily closed the Oktoberfest grounds (Theresienwiese), citing a potential link to the unfolding events.

Discovery of a body, possible explosives

Police discovered a male body near Lake Lerchenau, bearing gunshot wounds. Initial investigations suggest the individual may have rigged his parents’ home—located just minutes from the lake—with explosive devices before setting it ablaze and taking his own life. The body was carrying a backpack, which authorities believe could contain further dangerous devices. Bomb disposal teams were deployed, and the entire area was approached by helicopter before ground teams moved in.

Another person is reportedly missing, though officials have stated that no immediate danger is believed to stem from them. Nearby roads and schools have been shut, and police have established wide perimeter zones, urging residents and motorists to avoid the area.

Wiesn shutdown and ongoing inquiry

Officials announced the Oktoberfest would remain closed at least until 5 p.m. while possible connections between the incident and festival grounds are being investigated. A letter purportedly from the perpetrator is under consideration. Authorities emphasized that “all lines of inquiry are open,” including whether the event site was targeted.

Local police confirmed that roads and access points around Lerchenauer Straße have been fully blocked off, and the nearby Toni-Pfülf Str. school will remain closed until investigations conclude. The homicide unit, bomb disposal experts, and multiple special forces are active on site.
