A dramatic incident unfolded in Munich on Saturday night when a young visitor from the United States was struck by a tram.
According to police, the man ran onto the tracks near the city center without paying attention to oncoming traffic.
Emergency response on site
The tram driver, a 27-year-old, immediately applied the brakes but could not prevent the collision. Fire services reported that the vehicle came to a halt only after several meters.
The tourist, originally from New Jersey and 24 years old, ended up beneath the tram but was not trapped.
Rescue teams carefully lifted him out using a special spinal board designed for safe extrication.
Condition of the injured tourist
Paramedics transported the man to a Munich hospital with serious injuries. Authorities confirmed, however, that his life is not in danger.
Police have opened an investigation into the case, citing dangerous interference with rail traffic.
Support for the tram driver and passengers
A crisis intervention team was called in to support the tram operator, who was shaken by the event. None of the passengers in the crowded carriage suffered injuries, police added.
