A 22-year-old student from Munich suffered severe injuries after falling from the second floor of a university building late on Thursday evening, police said.
According to the Munich police headquarters, the city’s emergency services were alerted shortly after 9 p.m. on 16 October, when witnesses reported an injured person lying in an inner courtyard of the campus.
Locked inside after classes ended
Investigators said the young man — a registered student at the university — had spent the evening participating in an online meeting from one of the rooms.
He apparently fell asleep at his desk, and when he woke up, all doors had already been locked for the night.
Trying to find a way out, the student decided to climb through a window on the second floor in an attempt to reach the ground outside. During the descent he lost his footing and fell, landing in the courtyard below.
Emergency response and hospitalisation
Paramedics from Munich’s emergency service treated the man at the scene before transferring him to hospital for further care.
Police confirmed that he sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
Police assume accident, no criminal suspicion
At this stage of the investigation, officers believe the incident was an accident and no foul play is suspected.
The university has not yet issued a public statement, but officials are reviewing how the building came to be locked while a student was still inside.
Police did not disclose the student’s name, in accordance with privacy regulations.
