The school bell will ring in a one-week break this Friday — and that means movement across Bavaria. Many families in Munich are seizing the short holiday period for a getaway, putting extra pressure on traffic heading south towards the Alps and Italy.
The ADAC expects heavier traffic around Munich and Nuremberg, especially from Friday afternoon onwards when holiday departures peak.
Traffic delays expected on the route to Italy
Drivers heading toward Italy should prepare for delays. On the Brenner motorway, the Lueg Bridge remains restricted to a single lane, while ongoing roadworks continue on both the Austrian and Italian sides. The automobile club warns that queues and longer travel times are very likely throughout the weekend.
The advice: allow more time, travel early in the day if possible — and keep an eye on updates from Austrian and Italian traffic authorities.
Autumn holidays boost air travel too
Not everyone travels by car. The Munich Airport anticipates around 1.2 million passengers during the school break, along with approximately 8,300 takeoffs and landings at Erdinger Moos.
According to forecasts, Friday, 31 October, will be the busiest day, with close to 128,000 travelers passing through the terminals.
Where Munich residents are flying this autumn
For many, sunshine still beats sweaters: classic beach destinations remain on top of the booking charts this season, including:
- Antalya (Turkey)
- Hurghada (Egypt)
- Mallorca (Spain)
But it’s not all about the beach. A significant number of passengers are heading to major European cities such as London, with many already in the spirit of early Christmas shopping in the UK capital’s high streets.
A busy start to the holiday season
Whether on the motorway or at the airport, Bavaria will feel the rush of the short school break. Travelers heading south are advised to plan ahead — and pack patience.
