Google has officially launched its “AI Mode” in Germany, marking the first time the experimental feature is available within the European Union. After months of waiting — and a rollout in more than 180 countries outside the EU — users across Germany, Switzerland, and other European states can now activate the new search mode.

The expansion comes earlier than expected, closing a major regional gap that had frustrated European users since the feature’s initial global release.

What is Google’s AI Mode?

AI Mode represents a fundamental redesign of Google Search. Unlike the AI Overviews introduced earlier this year, which occupied only a portion of the results page, the new mode transforms the entire interface into an AI-driven conversation experience.

Users can type a question and receive a generated summary compiled from multiple web sources. They can then ask follow-up questions directly within the same thread — similar to an interactive chatbot, but powered by live web data.

What this means for websites and publishers

The arrival of AI Mode is expected to significantly affect website traffic and SEO strategies. Because the AI interface displays fewer traditional blue links, users may be less likely to click through to external pages.

SEO experts anticipate a continued decline in organic clicks, as Google increasingly positions itself as both search engine and answer provider. Publishers may need to adapt their content to remain visible in AI-driven search summaries.

However, the long-term impact remains uncertain. Early tests in the U.S. suggest that news and niche information pages can still perform well — provided their content is authoritative, factual, and easily interpretable by AI systems.

Rollout details in Germany and Europe

As of today, the AI Mode is gradually being activated for users across Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, Italy, and Spain. While it may not yet appear on the main Google homepage, full access is expected within the next 24 hours as the rollout completes.

Users can enable the feature through Google Labs or the Search Generative Experience (SGE) settings, depending on their account configuration.

What users can expect next

Google has not yet confirmed when AI Mode will become the default search experience in Europe. For now, both the traditional and AI versions will coexist.

Tech analysts view the expansion as a strategic step toward integrating Google’s large-language-model technology directly into everyday search — effectively turning search results into personalized, dynamic conversations.
