Munich is lacing up once again for its biggest running event of the year. On Sunday, October 12, 2025, the Munich Marathon returns — and this year’s edition promises to be “more dynamic, attractive, and experiential than ever,” according to the organizers.

More than 26,000 participants have already registered, representing a diverse mix of ages, backgrounds, and nationalities.

Among them: a 90-year-old runner from Canada, a 12-year-old competing in the 10K, and a 77-year-old athlete tackling the full marathon distance.

A race that almost didn’t happen

The future of the event was uncertain for months, as two organizations — the Munich Marathon GmbH and the Laufstadt Eventgesellschaft — competed for the hosting rights. The dispute even reached the courts.

Now, it’s official: Laufstadt Eventgesellschaft has secured the contract and is organizing this year’s marathon.

Their aim: to give the event a fresh start while maintaining Munich’s signature charm — combining athletic excellence with scenic city routes and a festive atmosphere.

Start and finish in the Olympiapark

As in previous years, the Olympiapark will serve as both the starting and finishing point. From there, runners will pass through some of Munich’s most famous landmarks:

  • Siegestor
  • Odeonsplatz
  • Marienplatz
  • Sendlinger Tor (new section)
  • Englischer Garten
  • Isarufer

The 10-kilometer run starts in the Werksviertel, one of Munich’s most vibrant new districts, offering a modern contrast to the city’s historic backdrop.

New routes for 2025: More variety, more city spirit

This year introduces an all-new half marathon course, beginning at Hans-Jochen-Vogel-Platz.

From there, runners head past the Olympiapark and into the heart of the city, where every kilometer reveals a new highlight — from majestic squares to tree-lined boulevards.

The route’s single-loop design means participants won’t retrace their steps — instead, they’ll enjoy a continuous sightseeing tour through Munich, culminating in the emotional finish inside the Olympiapark arena.

Registration and last-minute sign-ups

Late registrations — including entries for the Kids Run — are open until Saturday, October 11, 6:00 p.m., via marathonmuenchen.org.

Those who want a taste of the atmosphere before race day can join the Friendship Run on Saturday, October 11, at 11:00 a.m. in the Olympiapark.

This fun, non-competitive 5K run has no timing — just good vibes, teamwork, and a chance to meet fellow runners from around the world.

A marathon for everyone

From professional athletes chasing records to hobby runners and families, the Munich Marathon 2025 once again shows how sport connects people of all ages.

The combination of Munich’s urban beauty, enthusiastic crowds, and perfect autumn atmosphere makes it one of the most scenic city marathons in Europe.

And with more than 26,000 runners already committed, it’s shaping up to be a true celebration of endurance, community, and joy — right in the heart of Bavaria.
