After several years of cancellations, Feldmoching’s traditional Rosstag is making a full comeback in 2025.

On Sunday, October 12, the northern Munich district will once again turn into a stage for majestic draft horses, colorful carriages and brass band music, reviving a beloved local celebration that dates back more than four decades.

The Rosstag — literally “Horse Day” — has been a fixture of Feldmoching’s community calendar since 1983, but was repeatedly cancelled in recent years, first due to the pandemic and later because of financial constraints.

Dozens of horses parade through the village

This year, around 64 horses of various breeds — from Bavarian and Belgian cold-bloods to Percherons and pintos — will parade through Feldmoching’s historic village center.

“The carriages come from the greater Munich region, the Bavarian Forest and the Alpine foothills,” explains Robert Ratzisberger, chair of the Feldmochinger Rossler Association, which has organized the event since 2023.

He emphasizes that the Rosstag is deeply rooted in Bavarian culture and attracts visitors from all across the Munich area.

Community effort and costs

The day is a true community effort. The Zech family from Zehentmeier Hof hosts the festivities after the parade, while the local Burschenverein youth group helps with logistics and setup.

However, organizing the event is expensive: the total budget exceeds €30 000, covering everything from wagons and catering to road closures, infrastructure and safety requirements.

Funding comes mainly from proceeds of Midsummer Solstice celebrations, supported by a subsidy from the Feldmoching-Hasenbergl district committee.

“Without that help, the event wouldn’t be possible,” says Ratzisberger.

Schedule and highlights

The parade begins at 11 a.m. at the corner of Feldmochinger Straße / Georg-Zech-Allee and proceeds to the war memorial, where the horses will receive a traditional blessing.

Afterwards, the festivities continue at Zehentmeier Hof (Feldmochinger Straße 400), accompanied by live music from the Anderltaler Musikanten.

For the first time, a shuttle service will be available in the afternoon, taking guests to the Feldmoching Autumn Trade Fair, which runs in parallel.

Long-awaited revival

Originally held every year, the Rosstag now takes place every two years, but enthusiasm remains strong.

Residents see it not only as a festival of horses, but also as a celebration of togetherness, heritage and local pride — a reminder that Munich’s northern villages still live their traditions with heart and horsepower.
