Germany is witnessing a surge in demand for private and commercial protective shelters.
Fueled by growing anxieties over the war in Ukraine and fears of a potential escalation involving NATO, bunker builders across the country report a significant rise in inquiries.
Firms report sharp increase in requests
Mario Piejde, head of the construction company BSSD Defence, said his firm has seen inquiries jump by around 50 percent since the beginning of the year.
According to him, calls spiked particularly after recent drone attacks on Poland, which left many Germans worried about their own safety.
The Munich-based German Shelter Center has confirmed similar trends, stating that requests for consultations have markedly increased in recent months.
Demand from businesses and landlords
While private households remain a large customer group, Piejde noted a growing interest among companies and landlords.
Around 30 percent of new inquiries now come from employers wanting protective spaces for their staff, as well as property owners seeking shelters for tenants.
According to industry experts, as many as one in ten new residential buildings is now being planned with a bunker included.
How much does a private bunker cost?
Homeowners who do not already have a shelter can consider converting their basement.
Construction experts recommend using a corner room for maximum stability. Ideally, the protected space should not exceed 30 square meters and must be equipped for extended stays.
Walls and ceilings should be at least 30 centimeters thick. If necessary, an additional masonry layer with special mortar can be added.
Other essential features include a reinforced pressure door, ventilation and filter systems, overpressure valves, and an emergency exit. The space must also be sealed against gas infiltration.
Depending on size and equipment, the cost of a private bunker typically ranges between €30,000 and €50,000.
