The long, hot days of summer 2025 are behind us. According to the German Weather Service (DWD), meteorological summer officially ended on September 1, and the current forecast suggests that cooler, wetter days lie ahead.

Thursday is expected to bring changeable skies with showers across large parts of the country. Along the coasts, isolated thunderstorms may also occur.

As meteorologist Dr. Karsten Brandt from Donnerwetter.de told Bild: “Sorry, summer 2025 is now history”.

A week of unsettled conditions

Throughout the week, conditions will remain mixed, with increasing winds from Thursday onwards, especially in northern and western Germany.

According to Jürgen Schmidt of WetterKontor, while eastern Germany may still see temperatures close to 25°C until midweek, these values will decline by the weekend.

Most regions will then see daytime highs of only around 20°C.

Golden autumn in sight—or not?

Meteorologists are not optimistic about a return to warm, sunny weather. Extended summer-like days are unlikely based on current model runs.

Schmidt explained: “Up to the middle of next week, no significant change is expected. There will still be occasional sunny spells, but no return to hot or prolonged summer weather”.

Persistent low-pressure systems over northwestern Europe are expected to keep bringing moist air masses into Germany, resulting in showers, gusty winds, and occasional thunderstorms.

So will the famous “golden autumn” with mild sunshine and stable high-pressure weather patterns appear?

“Not before the end of next week,” Schmidt noted.

“But autumn has just begun, and models can shift in the weeks ahead.”

For now, Germany should prepare for a cool, unsettled start to autumn, with the prospect of calmer, brighter days later in the season. While the golden autumn remains possible, it is not yet on the horizon.
