For many in Germany, taking a summer holiday is non-negotiable—even amid rising living costs. According to the German Travel Association (DRV), people have not given up on their travel plans.
Popular choices this year included Eastern Mediterranean destinations, cruises, and long-haul trips. Spain, Turkey, and Greece emerged as the top three package holiday destinations for summer 2025.
DRV President Norbert Fiebig explained that while Germans still want to travel abroad, many are opting for traditionally more affordable destinations such as Bulgaria, Tunisia, Egypt, and Albania.
Survey reveals holiday spending patterns
An exclusive survey conducted by polling institute Civey among 2,500 respondents shows how much people are willing to spend on their summer holidays:
- 6% spent less than €500.
- 18% spent between €500 and €1,000.
- 29% spent €1,000 to €2,000.
- 20% spent €2,000 to €3,000.
- 14% spent more than €3,000 per person.
- 13% gave no answer.
The results highlight that nearly half of all respondents invested between €1,000 and €3,000 in their summer holiday.
Families face higher total costs
While individuals without children tend to spend more per person, parents often face much higher overall costs.
Among respondents with children, 13% reported spending between €2,000 and €3,000 per person, and 11% spent more than €3,000.
For a family of four, this translates to over €10,000 in holiday expenses.
Young adults are not always the thriftiest
Contrary to common assumptions, young adults are not necessarily the most frugal travelers. Just 9% of 18- to 29-year-olds said they spent between €500 and €1,000 on their holiday.
More than 20% of this age group reported spending €2,000 to €3,000. Interestingly, people in their thirties showed the widest variation: 27% spent less than €1,000, while another 27% exceeded €3,000 per person.
Looking ahead: demand for winter holidays
Travel enthusiasm does not end with summer. According to the DRV, many are already planning their winter holidays, with long-haul destinations and cruises in high demand.
Thailand, the Dominican Republic, the Maldives, and the United Arab Emirates are currently among the most popular choices for the upcoming winter season.
