The last Monday of October is bringing truly unpleasant weather to Bavaria’s capital. Munich woke up to a chilling five degrees Celsius, persistent rain and gusty winds reaching up to 80 km/h, making for a gloomy and uncomfortable start to the week.
The German Weather Service (DWD) has issued multiple official warnings for the region, including alerts for strong gusts and storm-force winds that could continue until late evening. The rough conditions follow a weekend that ended with dark clouds and showers — a stark contrast to the brief spells of sunshine seen on Sunday afternoon.
Weather system from Scandinavia brings stormy air
Meteorologists attribute the unsettled weather to a low-pressure system over Scandinavia, which is sending a stream of cool, moist maritime air across Bavaria.
“A lively westerly flow is pushing moderately cold sea air into southern Germany,” DWD experts explained in their Monday report.
For Munich, that means continuous rainfall through much of the morning and early afternoon. The rain is expected to ease briefly later in the day, though another wave of showers is likely to return by evening. Winds are forecast to remain strong through the afternoon before gradually subsiding at night.
Short break before warmer air arrives
While Monday will feel more like late November than October, the midweek outlook offers a touch of hope. By Wednesday and Thursday, significantly milder air will move into Bavaria, pushing daytime highs to around 16 to 17 degrees Celsius.
Before that happens, however, residents are advised to dress warmly, hold onto their umbrellas, and prepare for another blustery, rain-soaked day in the city.
