A large-scale police and fire service operation has been underway in Munich’s north since early Wednesday morning. Residents reported several loud explosions followed by gunfire in the area around Lerchenauer Straße. A large smoke cloud was visible from a distance, prompting a full emergency response involving special police units and bomb disposal experts.
One man dead, another injured
Police confirmed that a male body was found at the scene. According to preliminary findings, the man is believed to have rigged his parents’ home with explosives, set it on fire, and then taken his own life. Another person was discovered with gunshot wounds and was taken to hospital.
Area cordoned off, public urged to avoid the district
The Lerchenauer Straße area has been sealed off extensively. Authorities urged residents and commuters to avoid the neighborhood and follow diversion routes. Dozens of police vehicles, fire trucks, and ambulances were deployed, while helicopters monitored the situation from above.
Investigation ongoing
Specialists are currently examining the destroyed property and surrounding buildings for further explosives. Investigators have not yet confirmed the motive behind the incident, but stress there is no wider danger to the public at this stage. Updates from the police are expected throughout the day.
