Autumn in Bavaria started with violent thunderstorms and heavy rain that left parts of the region under water.

Nuremberg was particularly affected on Sunday night into Monday morning, when severe weather triggered flooding, traffic disruptions, and hundreds of emergency calls.

Flooding in Nuremberg

In Nuremberg’s Zerzabelshofstraße, an underpass was completely flooded and had to be closed temporarily. A bus that attempted to drive through before the closure was damaged and came to a stop at a nearby station.

Local residents described a dramatic night with torrential rain and lightning illuminating the skies.

Official warnings and risks

Both the German Weather Service (DWD) and the Federal Office for Civil Protection issued official warnings between midnight and 2 a.m., warning of storms with wind speeds up to 70 km/h and rainfall amounts of around 20 liters per square meter in a short period.

Authorities cautioned against staying outdoors, citing risks such as falling branches, flying debris, and sudden flash floods. Drivers were urged to avoid flooded streets and underpasses.

Widespread impact across Bavaria

The storm did not stop at Nuremberg. Municipalities across Middle Franconia and Upper Bavaria, including Eichstätt, Beilngries, and Altmannstein, as well as more than 690 other locations, were affected.

Emergency services were on constant duty throughout the night.

Unsettled weather continues

According to the DWD, the unstable weather pattern will persist. Low-pressure systems combined with moist and cool air are expected to bring further rainfall across Bavaria.

By late Monday afternoon, regions from Swabia to the Danube-Alb and into northeast Bavaria could see 30–40 liters of rain per square meter within 18 hours. Wind gusts of up to 60 km/h are also possible in exposed areas.

Temperatures will remain autumnal, ranging from just 9°C in Upper Franconia to around 19°C in Berchtesgadener Land.

Meteorologists warn that residents should prepare for wet, cool, and windy days ahead.
