A milestone has been reached at the construction site of what is planned to become Europe’s most modern pediatric hospital.

The New Hauner Clinic, currently under construction on the Großhadern campus in Munich, held its topping-out ceremony – marking another step towards replacing the internationally renowned Dr. von Hauner Children’s Hospital.

The facility is designed to set new standards in child and adolescent medicine, offering 196 beds and 1,408 rooms spread across an area the size of seven football pitches.

Timeline and construction progress

Following the groundbreaking in March 2023, the main structure is now visible: four upper floors and two basement levels have been completed. A 320-meter-long tunnel connecting supply and disposal lines is almost finished.

From 2026, façade work and interior installations will begin. Technical commissioning is scheduled for mid-2028, with handover to LMU Klinikum planned for late 2029 or early 2030.

Medical integration and training facilities

The New Hauner will be directly connected to obstetrics and existing units for neonatology, pediatric cardiology and palliative care already located at Großhadern.

The concept emphasizes short distances, close cooperation between disciplines, and strong links between patient care and research.

The first floor will house laboratories and seminar rooms, while the ground floor will feature a lecture hall, making the facility also a hub for medical education.

Architecture designed for healing

The clinic’s design includes open spaces, play areas, bright courtyards and a cafeteria, all aimed at creating a welcoming environment that supports recovery.

“This is one of Bavaria’s most important construction projects,” said State Construction Minister Christian Bernreiter, describing it as the beginning of a “new era for top-level medicine.” He praised the project for being on schedule and within budget.

The New Hauner is currently the largest building project in Germany, with the state of Bavaria contributing up to €600 million.

Science and Arts Minister Markus Blume stressed that the clinic will combine “cutting-edge medicine and human warmth.”

Prof. Markus M. Lerch, Medical Director of LMU Klinikum, added: “Together with everyone supporting us, we will create a hospital where children, parents and siblings can all contribute to the healing process.”
